Got A Vision? Expect Opposition!
I heard a talk by Bishop Jill Duff recently about Nehemiah and it was excellent teaching! In a nutshell, here is what she said: If God gives you a vision, expect opposition! Nehemiah was given a vision of rebuilding Jerusalem’s city wall and immediately he faced opposition from Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem who mocked the vision. Not only did they mock it, they started to ridicule him, question his motives, belittle and humiliate him, and accused him of rebelling against the king. When you have a vision, there will be opposition from accusers and doubters. So, make a stand against the accusers and wait for the doubters to come on board. Nehemiah knew that if the vision was from him it would disappear, but if it was from God, it would prevail. He made a stand against the discouraging words of his accusers and did three things. He watched and prayed which is exactly what Jesus told the disciples to do in the Garden of Gethsemane when He faced opposition from those plotting evil. "Watch and pray" (Matt 26:41). Nehemiah also declared, "The God of heaven will give us success", standing on God's calling, protection, provision and deliverance. And he got the people to work with one hand and hold their sword in the other hand. What's the sword? It's the word of God, powerful and active. Basically, he called them to fight with spiritual weapons, and to pray and not be afraid, because 'Great and awesome is our God'. And, crucially, he completed the wall!Posted by Marianne Needham-Bennett
