Proverbs 15:1 says that 'A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stirs up anger', and Proverbs 18:21 says 'The power of life and death is in the tongue and we will eat its fruit'. We have to be so careful about the words we speak because there is power in our words and we can use that power for good or for evil. It's not true that 'sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me'. Words can and do hurt. We can carry around a negative word spoken over us for years without realising the impact it's having on us. When we speak, we must ensure our words are life giving, affirming, encouraging, positive, maybe challenging but always spoken in both love and truth, not one or the other. We can 'call things into being' that are not yet seen, we can command healing in Jesus’ name, we can declare God's favour in situations. Let's watch our words to ensure that they are not negative, that we are not agreeing with the enemy who seeks only to destroy, kill and steal, but that they agree with the Word of God that brings ‘life to the full’. When we pray in accordance with God’s Word, we are speaking life into a situation. When we ask for more than we can imagine, we are praying God's best. We want to ensure that we eat good fruit so let's muzzle those negative, crushing words that destroy and limit and release words of life!
