Sometimes we think we can do it all by ourselves, don't we!? But as songwriter Joseph Scriven penned, "Oh, what peace we often forfeit, Oh, what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry, everything to God in prayer." Our God is the God of big things and little things, and if we don't take the little things to Him, they become the big things, but only after we’ve spent some time worrying about them or being in pain because of them. Psalm 55:22 and 1 Peter 5:7 encourage us to 'Cast our cares upon the Lord'. That's a very strong action. As we do, we can sometimes literally feel the weight lift off our shoulders and can stand upright again.
When we pray, the situation doesn't necessarily change but the way we perceive it does, and a new peace and hope settle in our heart and mind. God cares ‘affectionately and watchfully’ about us and listens closely as Jesus goes before Him and intercedes for us. He carries us before God just as four friends lowered the paralysed man down through the roof before Jesus (Luke 5:17-26). We’re called to carry one another and each other's burdens, whether that's in a marriage or in a friendship. If you’re carrying a small or heavy weight today, be encouraged to share it with others and take it before God, who has very big ears! He is delighted when we roll things over to Him and loves to provide a way or a solution.
