Bearing Fruit Is An Inside Job
We can't bear fruit on our own. We need the Holy Spirit to enable us by staying rooted in Christ.

I have a beautiful mixed media painting of large, luscious apple trees simply called 'Fruit'. I love it because it reminds me that I want my life to bear fruit for God. However, being fruitful is more an inside job than it is an 'Out there' job. Matt 7:18 says that ‘only a good tree can bear good fruit’ so, like healthy trees, we must concentrate on growing deep roots, tapping into good soil, receiving life giving water and staying in sight of the Son. If our soil is thin, stony and dry our fruit will be sparse. We can't produce good fruit without the power of the Holy Spirit being at work in us, without spending time in God’s presence, reading His word, praying to him and becoming more like Jesus, however hard we try! Working in our own strength to do good works is commendable but fruitless, because our ‘tree’ will topple over with the weight of fruit if we’re not well rooted, or the fruit will be tasteless. The Holy Spirit will ensure that our lives are fruitful, if first we spend time getting ourselves established. New ‘sapling’ Christians can bear fruit, but they need to mature to produce much fruit for many years. (Did you know it takes an oak tree around 40 years to start producing acorns!?) So, let's concentrate on bearing the fruit of the Spirit within ourselves, that 'Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control, then the external fruit will follow naturally and unforced.
