For any plant good, deep and healthy roots are vital because the roots determines the health of what grows above the surface.
Healthy roots mean a flourishing plant. The roots of family and friends for us are wonderful and to be valued and appreciated and protected. God put us in families to be loved and nurtured. Family and friends give us comfort, strength, a sense of belonging, courage, confidence, significance and self-worth. But sadly, those roots are temporary and flawed and are not a source of perfect truth and love. They can become distorted or destroyed through sickness, trauma, divorce and death and those we love removed from our lives.
So, it’s really important that we invest time and effort in developing our spiritual roots in Christ and that He is our greatest, deepest and strongest roots and support system. Christ's 'roots' are permanent, healthy and constant. They can never be pulled up, cut off or removed from our lives. Being rooted in Christ means that we get our comfort, purpose, strength, encouragement, meaning and confidence from the constant supply of perfect love and acceptance of Christ. God feeds and waters us in all seasons, and sometimes there are dry seasons but always for a reason. When roots are temporary, what they bear will be temporary. But when they are permanent, what they bear will be permanent. May we be rooted in Christ by spending time with Him daily, and our lives built on Him. Then we will grow strong, fruitful and fragrant.
